Safe Cracking

Crack the dial, claim the prize—every tumbler tells a story.

Safe Cracking

Safe-cracking is a new gameplay element introduced in *Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves*. It is one of several new skills Sly learns for the Cooper Vault heist, requiring the player to manipulate a safe's dial to open it. The minigame tests precision and timing, rewarding successful cracks with coins and loot that are immediately added to the coin count, as pickpocketed loot no longer needs to be sold back at the safe house.

Lore & Background

Safe-cracking appears in *Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves* as part of Sly's expanded skill set for the Cooper Vault heist. The game's plot centers on Sly assembling a team of experts to bypass Dr. M's extensive security on an island in the Pacific Ocean. Safe-cracking is one of the new gameplay elements Sly uses to access locked containers, alongside searching for clues in paintings, aerial combat, disguises, pirate ship battles, and conversations. The removal of clue bottles and vaults from previous games was unpopular with players, making safe-cracking a replacement mechanic for obtaining hidden loot.

In Their Own Story

In *Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves*, safe-cracking is one of the new skills Sly uses during the large flashback that makes up most of the game. As Sly and Bentley recruit new members—Murray, the Guru, Penelope, the Panda King, and Dimitri—they encounter various locked safes that require Sly's deft touch. The minigame appears in levels such as Venice, Italy, where the gang foils Octavio's tar-pollution scheme, and in Blood Bath Bay, where Dimitri seeks his grandfather's scuba gear. Each successful crack adds coins and loot directly to Sly's count, bypassing the need to sell items at the safe house.

Reader's Guide

To crack a safe in *Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves*, rotate the dial to align with target numbers, guided by audio cues like a crisp click or a visual indicator. The minigame is timed, requiring you to hit a sequence of positions—usually 2 to 3—before the timer expires. Missing a mark resets the sequence or accelerates the timer. Successful cracks reward coins and loot that are immediately added to your total, as special treasure is absent from the overworld.
