Taser
A crackling, non-lethal way to drop a guard without leaving a single mark.
The Taser is a non-lethal gadget in the Sly Cooper video game franchise, serving as one of Sly's standard pieces of equipment for incapacitating guards and henchmen without causing lasting harm. It embodies the series' core identity: Sly is a thief, not a killer, and his toolkit reflects that philosophy.
Across the early PS2-era entries, the Taser sits alongside other gadgets like the Grappling Hook and the Bouncing Ball as a go-to tool for clearing a room of enemies quickly, creating a brief window for Sly to grab a target, slip past, or set up the next phase of a heist.

Lore & Background
In the world of Sly Cooper, the Taser is the kind of tool a professional thief keeps in his belt: compact, quiet, and effective. A quick zap to the chest sends a guard spinning and dropping, buying Sly just enough seconds to loop a grapple, pocket a target, or back out of a corridor before the stunned enemy shakes off the shock. It is the signature of Sly's code—he takes what he wants and leaves every guard on their feet within a minute.
The gadget fits naturally into the Cooper family's long history of heists. Bentley, the tech-savvy raccoon, is the one who designs and calibrates most of Sly's equipment, and the Taser is no exception. It is a purpose-built, low-voltage device tuned to incapacitate rather than injure, a deliberate contrast to the firearms the rival Muggles and the Clockwerk army would prefer to see in a thief's hands.
Across the early trilogy, the Taser remains a reliable mid-range option: not as versatile as the Grappling Hook, not as chaotic as the Bouncing Ball, but straightforward and dependable when a room full of guards needs to go quiet at once.
In Their Own Story
The vault door hissed open and Sly counted six guards, two on each flank, one at the back. Bentley's voice crackled in his ear: "You've got thirty seconds before the rotation shift." Sly didn't need thirty. He drew the Taser, felt the familiar weight of it in his paw, and stepped into the blue-lit corridor. First guard went down with a sharp crackle and a yelp. Second. Third. The remaining three spun, hands reaching for sidearms, but Sly was already behind them, the Taser humming against each one in a quick, practiced rhythm. By the time the last guard hit the floor, Bentley was already typing the vault's combination into the panel. "Nice and clean," Bentley said. "No one's gonna remember much of that." Sly tucked the Taser back into his belt and winked at the ceiling camera. "That's the point."
Reader's Guide
In-game function: The Taser is a non-lethal gadget that delivers a short-range electric shock, stunning one or more nearby enemies for a brief period. Stunned enemies drop their weapons and are temporarily unable to act, giving Sly a window to grab them, move past them, or set up a follow-up gadget.
Wielder: Sly Cooper. It is part of his standard gadget loadout and is selected from the gadget wheel or quick-select menu during gameplay.
Availability: The Taser is present from the first entry, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Theft, and carries through the early PS2 trilogy. In Sly 2: Band of Thieves and Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves it can be purchased or unlocked as part of the gadget shop progression. In later entries the gadget roster shifts, and the Taser's specific role may be replaced by a different stun-type tool.
Upgrades / variants: No major mechanical upgrades to the Taser itself are widely documented across the series. Its role remains consistent: a reliable, single-target (or small-area) stun. It does not replace the Grappling Hook or the Bouncing Ball but complements them in close-quarters crowd control.
Practical tip: The Taser is most effective when used on a group that is already distracted (e.g., after a Bouncing Ball bounce or a thrown object), because the stun window is short and you want maximum enemies down simultaneously.

- The Taser appears as a core gadget from the very first Sly Cooper title, making it one of the longest-running pieces of equipment in the franchise.
