Lasso
One loop, one yank, and the whole guard squad is on the floor.
The Lasso is one of Sly Cooper's signature tools, a coiled rope-and-knot device used to snare enemies, yank them into range, and grab objects across the game world. It has been a core part of the Cooper gang's heist toolkit from the earliest entries through the modern titles, serving as both a combat option and a puzzle-solving instrument.
Unlike a projectile weapon, the Lasso is a reach-and-pull tool: Sly hurls the loop, it wraps around a target, and he reels it back. This makes it uniquely suited to the series' emphasis on acrobatic, non-lethal thievery, letting the player redirect enemies, retrieve keys, or swing across gaps without a single shot fired.

Lore & Background
The Lasso has been a Cooper family staple for generations. Where the original Cooper gang relied on sleight of hand and a well-timed distraction, the Lasso added a physical reach that let Sly control the battlefield without breaking his cover. It is less a weapon and more a conversation-stopper: a quick flick of the wrist, a taut rope, and an enemy is suddenly very interested in the ceiling.
Across the series the tool has evolved in presentation but not in philosophy. In the early 2D and 3D entries it served as a straightforward grab-and-pull for enemies and small objects. By the time of Sly Cooper and the Thieves in Time, the Lasso is one of four core tools, each mapped to a distinct verb—grab, distract, swing, bounce—and the Lasso's grab-and-reel mechanic is refined for longer ranges and more precise targeting. The underlying idea remains the same: Sly solves problems by pulling things toward himself, whether that thing is a guard, a keycard, or a suspiciously heavy vault handle.
Within the gang's dynamic, the Lasso is Sly's personal tool. Bentley handles tech, Murray provides muscle, and Clover scouts and supports, but the rope is Sly's. It fits his style—quick, a little showy, and always with a wink at the camera.
In Their Own Story
The vault door was locked, the guards were armed, and the clock was ticking. Sly didn't draw a gun. He didn't need one. He flicked the Lasso in a lazy arc, the loop catching the nearest guard around the ankles, and with a sharp tug the man went horizontal. The second guard lunged; Sly reeled the rope back, used the momentum to swing over the counter, and landed in a crouch behind the third. A quick loop, a yank, and the whole squad was tangled in a heap of uniforms and confused expressions. Bentley's voice crackled over the comms: "Sly, the keycard is on the desk behind them." Sly grinned, looped the Lasso around the card, and reeled it in like a fish on a line. "Copy that, Bentley. And tell the boss the heist is on schedule."
Reader's Guide
The Lasso is Sly's grab-and-pull tool. In combat, you aim and release to loop an enemy, then reel them toward you or into a wall. It is non-lethal and works on most standard guards. In puzzles, the Lasso retrieves objects across gaps, pulls levers, or drags crates to activate pressure plates.
In Sly Cooper and the Thieves in Time the Lasso is one of four core tools (alongside the Whistle, Grappling Hook, and Bouncer). You switch between them on the fly. The Lasso excels at short-to-mid-range enemy control and object retrieval. Upgrades across the series generally increase range, reel speed, or the number of targets you can loop in a single throw.
Tips: Use the Lasso to pull an enemy into a hazard rather than fighting them directly. In tight corridors, a well-timed yank can clear a whole row of guards. For puzzles, look for objects just out of reach—keys, switches, or items on high ledges. The Lasso is often the intended solution where the Grappling Hook is too slow or the Bouncer is too imprecise.
The tool is exclusive to Sly in most gameplay. Other gang members do not wield it in standard missions, though cutscenes occasionally show the gang working in tandem around his pulls.
Did You Know?
- The Lasso is one of the few tools in the series that is purely mechanical—no tech, no gadgets—just rope and a Cooper's wrist.
- In Sly Cooper and the Thieves in Time, the Lasso, Whistle, Grappling Hook, and Bouncer are the four core tools, each mapped to a distinct gameplay verb.
- The Lasso's pull mechanic has been used to solve environmental puzzles as often as it has been used in combat, making it a dual-purpose tool throughout the series.
- Sly's signature style—quick, acrobatic, non-lethal—is embodied most directly by the Lasso, which resolves most encounters without a single projectile.
